BRICS is first and foremost China — but not China alone

China sets the scale: it ranks first among BRICS countries in publications, fractional score, citations and average Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI). The other countries form more compact research landscapes, notable less for volume than for specialisation, the quality of individual publications and organisational links.

Russia’s organisational landscape is centred on HSE University, Skoltech, AIRI, MIPT and Yandex

The ranking of Russian organisations shows not only academic concentration but also a company among the top five. The corporate sector is smaller than the academic sector by volume, but has a higher average FWCI.

Russia’s corporate landscape is heterogeneous: volume, impact and partnerships are distributed across different companies

Yandex has the largest Russian corporate publication output. Sber ranks second and stands out for the breadth of its academic partnerships. In 2020–2022, Samsung AI Center — Moscow and Huawei Moscow Research Center were notable players with a small number of high-impact publications, while T-Bank/T-Technologies and MTS are newer visible players.

Russia does not match China in scale, but retains a stable third-largest research landscape within BRICS

Russia’s contribution is small relative to the global corpus but well structured, combining strong universities, specialised research institutes and technology companies. Within BRICS, Russia therefore acts less as a mass producer and more as a networked research player.

Russia’s results rely on interaction among universities, research institutes, public research centres and companies. The sector structure shows coverage in publications, fractional score and citations.
